Error when establishing a secure Firefox connection – how to fix it

Each user has his own preferences concerning the choice of browser for his computer, phone. However, one of the most popular web browsers is the software company Mozilla. But what to do if there is an error when establishing a secure Firefox connection – how to fix it in Windows 10 8 7? Next, let’s look at the key ways, and at the end of the article you can watch a video with a clear demonstration of solutions.

Error in Mozilla browser

Why can’t the page be displayed in Mozilla?

There are two possible situations:

  • Your browser is trying to connect to a site that uses a SSL certificate (such a site usually starts with https://). At first Firefox checks if the request is correct and verifies the data. And if at least one discrepancy is detected, you will see a similar notification:

  • The second case: the site is a threat, which causes blocking its download. Click on “Advanced” to see for yourself – Firefox does not trust the source:

From all of the above we can draw the following conclusion: it is not our fault for what is happening. But we can affect the situation (although not always). Let’s move on to the consideration of methods.

Error when establishing a secure Firefox connection – how to disable, bypass blocking?

Immediately note that the following instructions are relevant not only for Windows 7 8 10 ( plus Win XP ), but also for Mac OS X.

Directly on the official Mozilla website you can see such recommendations:

  • Disable the anti-virus filter responsible for online checking. This applies to any software installed on your computer – Kaspersky, AVG, Avira, ESET Nod32, etc. It is advised to discard third-party applications and trust the built-in Windows Defender;
  • For verification, the browser uses certificates with a certain validity period. Therefore, the error may be due to an incorrect date on the PC. Be sure to check this point and make adjustments if necessary:

It is better to set automatic detection of time zone and time.

But there is another side of the coin – if the certificate has expired, you will not be able to access the resource until the site owner renews it. Unfortunately, this happens from time to time. And not only with small projects, but even with such giants as Yamdex.ru (Yandex), Mail.ru, Zakupki.gov.ru (Zakupki Gov), Electronic Budget, etc.

  • Fails to verify the certificate publisher, causing the browser to distrust the site. As a result, an error is displayed when establishing a secure connection in Mozilla Firefox. You can bypass the warning if you do not doubt the quality of the visited web-page;
  • Certificate database is corrupted – the file with the database is stored on your PC in the user’s browser directory. To get to it you need to write the path in the address bar:

about:support

You will find the line “Profile folder” in the window and open it:

Now close Firefox, otherwise further actions will have no effect on the situation. Find the file named “cert9.db” in the directory and delete it:

Re-run Firefox and check if the defect was fixed in this way.

  • Extension conflicts are a fairly common cause. Especially if your browser has add-ons with questionable reputations. You need to go to:

about:addons

Try disabling one plugin at a time and see if the error is resolved. Do the same with themes (it is better to leave standard one):
