Dual protection in the form of duplicate storage on independent drives, makes My Book World Edition II a tool for continuous automatic backup of files stored on all computers on the network. My Book World Edition i is compatible with both Macintosh and PC computers.

According to a July 2008 report by research firm Parks Associates, the number of households with networked data access worldwide will grow from 170 million in 2008 to 240 million by the end of 2012. The study also states that by 2012, each such home will see an increase in storage space requirements, reaching an average of 900 GB. Additionally, customers ranked the size of available memory as the most important feature of NAS devices.

The network storage system offered by WD uses RAID1 technology when automatically creating and storing copies of user data. This means that if ever one of the two drives fails, the hardware will nevertheless continue to do its job and the data will remain safe. Additionally, the My Book World Edition II network drive includes software that makes it easy to set up automatic and continuous backups for all the computers in the house. It has been formatted by default to work in RAID Mirroring mode, so that half of the total capacity available on both drives can be used for additional data backup.

Music, photos and movies can be streamed directly from the My Book World Edition II drive to any PC, Macintosh or DLNA-certified media devices (such as TVs, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 and wireless digital photo frames) via the integrated Universal Plug and Play server and iTunes Music module. Users can also access their files securely from anywhere in the world via the Internet using the free MioNet service that comes with every My Book World Edition II.
