How to compress video in Movavi: how to resize and how to reduce in the converter

Today, various devices are used to watch videos, including smartphones with a compact screen and a small amount of memory. That’s why users often need to reduce the size of a video clip when creating it. This can be done with the help of Movavi. This editor features a simple and straightforward interface. But despite this, there is a precise order that defines how you can compress video in Movavi.

Adding a file to the program

Editing video clips in Movavi Video Converter is performed on the editing table, which opens after launching the program.

To add a video clip, you need to:

  • Start the program and click “Add video” in the main menu.

  • Find the clip you need in the opened window.
  • Drag the clip onto the timeline with the left mouse button.

Files in Movavi are added to a separate library. The program does not save clips or images, so this procedure must be performed each time.

After adding a clip to the timeline, you can start editing the file. All changes you make are automatically saved. However, after editing, the video must be converted. That is, you must save the changes you make as a new file.

Selecting the format

To reduce the size of the video file you need to do the following actions in the converter:

  • Select the clip. After that all editing tools for the file will open.
  • Remove subtitles if they are (or should be) embedded. This saves several dozens of kilobytes. Click the “No subtitles” button to delete.
  • Click on the active audio track (the line is below the subtitle settings). If you don’t need audio accompaniment in your future video, uncheck the corresponding checkboxes. This solution helps reduce the file size by several megabytes.
  • Click on the title of the clip and select a format.

The following formats are available for users to choose from:

  • MP4;
  • AVI;
  • MOV;
  • MPG;
  • M4V;
  • WebM;
  • SVG;
  • FLV and others.

The format determines the quality of the frames displayed and, as a consequence, the size of the video file. When selecting this option, it is recommended to take into account for which devices the clip is converted. If the latter is intended for viewing on smartphones, it is recommended to choose a format lower than 720p. MP4 is considered a suitable option for compression.

When setting the format, it is also recommended to take into account the devices on which the clip will be viewed. If you can install a player on your computer or smartphone that supports playback of a particular type of file, you may have problems with TVs. Therefore, it is recommended to choose popular formats like AVI or MP4.

Specifying the desired video size

You can also change the following parameters to reduce the file size:

  1. Frame Reduction Algorithm. There are 4 options to choose from: low, good, high and best.
  2. Speed/Quality. The higher the first parameter, the bigger the file size.
  3. Encoding type. This option has no significant effect on video clip quality and size.
  4. Optimization.

In addition, you can change the frame rate when selecting the format. But in this case it is recommended to check how the video will look after conversion. In particular, if the clip is presented as changing images, you should set the frame rate to 1-5 frames per second.

To reduce the file size you can compress the audio track “stitched” into the clip. This should be done when multichannel audio is used in the video. To compress such a track, go to the “Audio” section and change the following parameters:

  • codec – it is recommended to choose MP3 for old players;
  • bitrate type – custom;
  • bitrate – 128 kbps;
  • sample rate – 48000;
  • channels – stereo.

If there is only voice on the video, the bitrate should be reduced to 64 kbps, and the “Channels” parameter should be set to “Mono”. Such changes help to compress the clip by 5 times or more.

Movavi provides both standard and advanced settings. The first option is suitable for faster video compression, while the second option causes the conversion to take longer. You can also set the desired size of the compressed file in the program. After that, Movavi will automatically make changes to the rest of the settings.

Start the compression process

Click the “Start” button to start the conversion process. To speed up the conversion, check all the options available in the “Accelerate” section.

The duration of this procedure depends on both the size of the original file and the type of changes made. At the end of the process Movavi automatically opens the folder where the converted video clip will be saved.
