How to detect viruses in your computer

All methods to detect viruses on your computer

Internet is an integral part of modern human life. On the other hand, it becomes a source of dangerous viruses, some of which should be removed in the initial stages of “infection”. But how to detect viruses in the computer? What are the most common symptoms of infection? About this and not only in my next article.

Of course, you can catch a “virus” without connecting to the Internet. For example, if you insert a “malicious” USB flash drive into a USB port. I wrote about this in the article How a Virus Is Blocking a USB Port.. Or you exchange files within your work network.

Today, even the best antivirus does not provide 100% protection.

But there are many ways to detect a virus even without special software. Now I will tell you about them, but first we will look at the main signs of the “disease”.

How do I know if I am infected?

Hackers who develop malicious scripts are rather cunning individuals who skillfully disguise the threat as a safe program. In any case, there is no need to panic and see everything as dangerous. It is necessary to carefully analyze the situation.

You can start to worry when:

  • During Windows startup, a blocking window appears, which contains text like “You have violated such-and-such articles of the criminal code and the case will be taken to court. To avoid it, send a text message / top up your account, etc.”. Remember I told you about this virus not so long ago?
  • You can’t access social networking sites or search engines. Again, a window appears prompting you to pay money. I wrote about this in detail in the feature article.
  • The system does not respond too quickly to your commands, applications open slowly, the procedure of copying / moving files takes too long.
  • Booting the OS takes longer than before. It is worth noting that this sign is relevant if you have not installed any third-party applications that might be registered in the autostart.
  • When starting the PC, the The browserBrowser opens automatically, homepage is changed and network traffic is constantly consumed (though you don’t do anything about it).
  • Spam (via e-mail and social networks) starts being sent in your name.
  • Double mouse clicks stop working when opening files (assuming that your mouse is working).
  • Documents, applications and other files disappear without a trace.
  • Software doesn’t start or runs with errors which didn’t occur before.

If any of these symptoms are present, there is a possibility of infection. But there is no need to panic, because I am always ready to tell you how to remove viruses.

Methods of detection

I will not tell you how to detect a malicious code (file) using antivirus software. I am sure everyone will be able to do it. It is sufficient to run a full scan with built-in / third-party software (Kaspersky, Dr.Web Cure It!).

I would like to tell more about a case when the system is running without antivirus (or the latter is of no use).

Checking process manager

This is the first thing that comes to my mind when suspicions arise. Often a trojan masquerading as a safe process does its dark work. How to detect it?

  • Open the list of running services and applications with the combination “Ctrl – Shift – Esc”.

Wow, that is a lot of obscure processes. How to find unnecessary ones?

  • The system ones must be excluded right away.

Here is a brief list:

  1. Csrss
  2. Lsass
  3. Explorer
  4. Svchost
  5. Wininit
  6. System
  7. Winlogon
  • Go through your list carefully. “Spies” and other malware can hide under the same names with a difference of one or two letters. Here, take a closer look:
Task manager window with viral processes
  • If the list contains names consisting of a meaningless set of letters and numbers, you should think twice:
Task manager window with very suspicious process names
  • If in doubt, you’d better type the name of the process to learn more about it.

One of these processes is Recycler virus I told you about how to get rid of it.

С task manager figured it out? If you have any questions, write in the comments, I will answer them.

Analyze autoloading

Most viruses run together with the system, blocking it or activating their harmful functions. Do you want to know how to “calculate” such fiends?

  • Call the “Run” window with the Win + R combination.

  • Enter the command “msconfig” to open the Microsoft configurator.

  • Something similar will appear on the screen (only with different “Autorun” list items):

System configuration window
  • Again, look at the names, check them through Google / Yandex. If you are sure that you did not add the item to Autorun and it is not associated with an installed application, then feel free to remove it.
  • Restart your PC and repeat the previous steps. If the deleted item is active again, then it is definitely a virus. More thorough scanning and treatment will be required.

Here we have dealt with the simplest ways, which will allow you to detect the threat at the initial stage absolutely free of charge. This approach is most effective in preventing the further spread of the “infection”. More material can be found at virus treatmentThere are described the most common viruses and methods to combat them.

If the article was useful, why not thank the author (I mean me) with reposts in social networks. I would be very grateful. And do not forget that in any situation you can contact me through the comment form.
