Many Google services are integrated into Android smartphones. So, when you first turn on your device, the user is asked to create a Google account and activate the voice command “OK, Google” to configure the voice assistant. For many people, the presence of the assistant of an American company is unnecessary, and therefore it is important to understand how to disable Google Assistant on the Android operating system.
Why disable Google Assistant
Google Assistant is an assistant to the owner of the device, which processes voice commands, allowing you to perform certain actions without physical contact with the smartphone. Frankly, the assistant is only useful to a limited number of users.
So, it really helps people with low vision who have a lot of difficulty dialing and other operations. However, if you are used to interacting with your smartphone directly, it makes sense to turn off the assistant. And there are several reasons for this.
Saving of resources
The fact that the assistant is called by the command “OK, Google” indicates that it is constantly working in the background. This negatively affects the performance of the device and the autonomy of the gadget. By turning off the voice assistant, you will prolong the life of the phone on a single charge, as well as reduce the load on the processor and can provide more resources to run other applications.
There’s another side to Google Assistant – access to the user’s personal information. First, the Assistant uses a microphone to process commands, and therefore the sensor is always on. In addition, the assistant collects information about your online activities in order to select relevant promotional offers. If you’re concerned about your privacy and don’t want your personal data to become freely available due to a security vulnerability, opt out of using Google Assistant.
Ways to disable it
Speaking of disabling the assistant, it is important to note that it can be launched in two ways:
- Through a voice command;
- Through pressing a hotkey.
As a rule, both ways work by default. That is, you can call the assistant both with the command “OK, Google” and by pressing a special button. But if you want, you can turn off one of the actions. For example, if you don’t want the assistant to record your voice all the time, just disable the voice command. If you want to completely opt out of using the Google Assistant, you will have to disable it through your account settings.
Deactivating it in your account
To begin with, let’s look at the basic option that allows you to disable the function once and for all, so that the assistant does not work under any circumstances. This instruction will be relevant for any smartphone, whether “Samsung” or Xiaomi, so carefully study the presented algorithm:
- Launch the Google app.
- Press the button in the form of three dots (“More”).
- Go to “General settings” and then to “Google Assistant”.
- Move the slider to the “Off” position.
Once you’ve done these steps, the Assistant will stop working, and it will also stop collecting user information. If you want to continue interacting with the assistant, but without using the voice command, note the following instructions.
Now on to how to turn off the assistant when you try to call it with a voice command. To perform the operation you will need to:
- Open the gadget settings.
- Go to the “Applications” section.
- Press the three-dot button.
- Open the “Default Apps” tab, and then open the “Voice Assistant” tab.
- Remove Google from the presented list by setting “No”.
This is not the only way to deactivate the command by voice. You can also perform its deactivation through the American company’s proprietary app:
- Launch the Google app.
- Click the “More” button.
- Go to the “Voice Match” section.
- Deactivate the slider.
There’s also no getting around other ways to interact with the assistant. As we said before, it is invoked not only with a voice command, but also with hotkeys. If you want to opt out of calling Google Assistant specifically through taps, do the following:
- Open your smartphone settings.
- Go to “Advanced Settings” and then to “Button Functions”.
- In the “Launch Google Assistant” tab, set it to “No”.
Finally, in the advanced settings of the phone you can find another item – “Start Google Assistant with the power button”. Set it to “No” if you want to avoid false positives and use only the voice command.
How to uninstall Google Assistant on Android
The application responsible for Google Assistant is pre-installed. That is, by default, it cannot be uninstalled completely. The user has only the option of clearing the cache:
- Open the phone settings.
- Go to “Applications”.
- Select “Assistant”.
- Press the “Clear Cache” button.
Anyway, you can still get rid of the Google Assistant. True, you’ll have to turn to third-party software to do this. It’s also necessary to weigh up all the pros and cons, because to remove the built-in apps you need root access, getting it will take the phone out of warranty and block transactions. If that doesn’t stop you, follow the instructions:
- Install Titanium Backup.
- Launch it.
- Grant all permissions, including root access.
- Go to the “Backups” section.
- Tap on the Google Assistant app.
- Click the “Delete” button.
- Confirm the operation.
You can do the same with other pre-installed apps that you can’t uninstall through your phone’s settings and the Play Store. But be aware of the consequences of giving root rights without later revoking them.
