How to disable two-factor authentication in Apple ID

Apple's two-factor authentication - what it is, how to disable it

Everyone knows that the main advantage of “apple” gadgets is a well thought-out policy of security and safety of user data. Recently I was asked a question, how to disable two-factor authentication in Apple ID? So I decided not only to answer that question, but to tell you what it is all about and what it was created for.

Apple's strengthened authentication

How does it work?

This concept is an additional Apple ID security item that ensures that only you can access your account, even if someone else knows your security password. This is a state-of-the-art approach to protecting user data. This way, you can get a 100 percent guarantee that no unauthorized person will use your device.

The enabled multi-level identification option does an excellent job of protecting the account from hacking and intrusion by other users. Only the owner of the ID will be able to access it, because the system requires two types of information:

  • password from Apple ID;
  • a numeric code sent to all the trusted devices – this is the proof of the authorization.

Let me explain with a small example: you want to get into the personal profile icloud from any browser or application. To do this, you have to enter your login and passwords. But even after successful authorization you will not log in to your account – you have to enter a pin to confirm that you are logged in legally.

Such a code will be on the devices tied to the Apple ID. So you have to enter the numbers in a special window in the iCloud to access your profile.

How two-factor authentication works

If you enter the digits correctly the first time, you will not need to enter it again after further software activations. A repeat procedure may be necessary in the following cases:

  • parameters have been reset;
  • A re-entry is performed.

Besides, it is obligatory to constantly enter numeric protection for the functions having high level of reliability, for example, when changing phone parameters, deleting system settings and so on.

What is the difference between the two common concepts?

If you are a user of iPhone 7 or any other, it is important to know the difference between the two-step verification and the concept we are considering, because their action is similar, but the meaning is different:

  • The check was created and installed in Apple devices three years ago. Its main purpose is an additional level of control over the activation of the “Apple” account. It can be found in the devices, starting from iOS 9 firmware versions.
  • Authentication is a more functional and extensive verification method. The company has improved the service and added new verification systems, including location interaction. The essence of card interaction is the marking of “security” points.

We all regularly visit some certain places, so that on the map you can choose several places at once, from which it is easy to perform authorization. When entry is made beyond the checkpoints, a verification pin and a message about possible tampering and illegal entry is sent instantly to the previously mentioned devices.

In fact, 2-factor authentication is the most secure and advanced version of identity control. Verification sends a security password to the trusted device, while authentication will also analyze the location of the iPhone and warn the owner of the potential threat.

Basic requirements

Such a security feature is designed for these kinds of devices:

  • The entire “family” of iPhones and iPads running IOS 9 and fresh releases of the operating system;
  • PCs already running OS X El Capitan. Combinations sent to the PC, are visible in iTunes, for the normal display of notifications should use the version of iTunes 12.3 or newer;
  • iWatch, which functions Watch OS 2;
  • Apple TV (tvOS operating system).

How to deactivate?

If you decide to deactivate the service, you will no longer receive requests with the requirement to enter additional combinations. You will not need to confirm your location either. The instructions are simple enough:

  • Go to the cloud page via your desktop browser;
  • Authorize the service – enter your password and login;
  • In the empty field that opens, enter the usage authorization numbers indicated on other devices;
Specify Apple's access pin
  • You click on the resolution in the box, and it pops up on your cell phone;
  • The browser immediately redirects you to the user’s page. If the browser is not previously listed as a trusted address, click “I trust this browser” on the device and click continue;
Allowing access to your gadget
  • Then click on the settings section. It is located on the main page of a successful login, click on “Settings”. They are located on the main page of the desktop version of Icloud. You can enter the desired section by selecting a username, it’s on the top right side. Then click on “iCloud Settings” in the drop-down list;
Link to iCloud settings
  • Click on the “Manage” button. It’s next to the name of the account holder;

  • This will redirect you to the corporation’s resource. Here you also need to authorize by entering your username and key;

Apple account login form
  • go to the account management window and click the security tab – “Change”;
Link to change Apple's security settings
  • We are interested in the field “Disable”, you have to select it. After that, confirm the action through the entry of the password sent to the trusted gadget.

The principle behind two-factor authentication is to keep users as safe as possible from potential unauthorized access attempts. Just for this reason, in order to completely disable the service, the developers have created a special block with questions that you have already answered when registering for Apple ID. When you enter your correct answers, you can deactivate the function.

Giving answers to Apple's verification questions

The last step is to confirm your wish.

Trusted equipment

A verified device is any of your “apple” gadgets. There is only one requirement – all devices must be linked to the same Apple ID. This is the principle by which groups of trusted devices are created. You won’t be able to confirm identification through a smartphone or other device that isn’t part of your Apple device group.

You will only be able to interact with two-factor authentication from one owner of a tablet, PC, or phone. The list of such devices is a directory of different models of devices to which a code with numbers will be sent to confirm logging in to Apple ID or some program. You can get acquainted with the list directly in the application, there is a tab Devices.

Apple gadgets you trust

Numbers from the trusted list

This is a list of all the numbers of the mobile provider, which will receive a digital pin, if necessary. SMS can be sent as a text or as a call from the manufacturer’s special robot. During the first setup, you need to mark at least one real mobile number. Adding a number is simple – enter it in the field with the settings and confirm it. To confirm you must enter the pin in the window that opens. A SIM card with a linked number must be in a device that you trust, otherwise the codes won’t come.

What should you remember?

Do not forget that the two-factor authentication is a whole ordered system of actions, they are primarily aimed at saving your information, you can disable it, but do you need it? For the option to work well, you should remember the following information:

  • login data from the account;
  • Program codes – numeric combinations you have defined yourself in your personal profile;
  • The main key – a set of different characters automatically generated after activation. It will come in handy if you lose access to verified machines and mobiles. It is better to make a screenshot of this key and send it to a folder on your computer or other equipment. In addition, you can make a record on a memory card or even an ordinary piece of paper. It is important to keep this information safe and to use a universal key.
Two-factor authorization on your iPhone screen

I’ll give you one more piece of advice: update your numbers in time. If you change your SIM card, edit the data in your profile immediately. Otherwise, you will not be able to enter your ID. It is also necessary to monitor the security of the smartphone or other “apple” device. It is better to use a fingerprint scanner to limit unlocking. Not only can virtual hacking hurt, but also illegal access by strangers to your device.

This process does not take much time. But if you decide to remove it first and then activate it again, you’ve made the right decision. That way you have an extra layer of security that protects the information in the hardware memory, various programs, and in the cloud.

On iPhones and iPads

The instructions are simple enough:

  • go to your smartphone’s menu;
  • Find iCloud;
  • Select subitem “Password”;
Turning on 2-factor authorization on iPad
  • we are interested in the “Set up two-factor authentication” section;
  • type in the key sent to the trusted device and complete the procedure. You type in the key on any drive.

On Mac OS.

Here only El Capitan and newer OS firmware versions can use two-factor authentication:

  • find the system settings;
  • click on Icloud and start the Account Information Adjustment mode;
  • In the other window click on “Security”, then the system will ask you to enter the password;
Making changes to your iCloud account
  • Click on the setting at the bottom of the window. Confirm the security combination displayed on all devices that are tethered to an Apple ID.

Options for receiving notifications

Messages with protection can come not only to special devices, but also to the Find iPhone service. You can put such an option in the Apple ID menu. Then the verification combination will be sent to the devices, as well as to the search services of your iPhone. So it will be convenient for you in one window to see activation attempts from suspicious points, and watch the protection code. I should note right away, this option functions only with authentication.

The main advantages

Apple ID contains information about trusted gadgets, as well as bank card information, personal contacts of the owner. In virtual storage, many people can find photos of documents and other valuable information, the loss of which can lead to terrible consequences. As you can see, disabling the two-factor service is not very difficult, but in order to better protect your data, it’s still better to use it. I would like to point out the following advantages:

  • all “apple” devices have a unified security organization;
  • a wide choice of control settings;
  • 100% guarantee of super-reliable protection from different variants of hacking.

Shortcomings in operation

We can see that there are many real pros of two-factor authentication, but there is a huge number of users who prefer to disable this feature. In fact, it complicates the use of the smartphone, because it is necessary to remember the keys, there is a possibility of losing the number or one of the verified devices, so that creates certain problems:

  • at the same time with this option, third-party software cannot be used. For example, this applies to iMobie AnyTrans or the well-known PhoneRescue program;
  • difficult to log into Icloud – the service is not designed perfectly, so sometimes there are system errors even when the cloud access key is correctly entered;
  • interaction with cellular networks – in areas with poor coverage this service often does not work;
  • you are tied to passwords – verification will only take place if there is another device tied to the corresponding ID. If there is not, you can use a permanent combination stored in the account parameters, but in reality, users rarely remember it or write it down somewhere.

So it is understandable that some iPhone owners would like to disable this service.

Reset forgotten password

If you decided to disable the option, but stopped at the stage of entering the pin, you need to reset the code word. The sequence of actions is quite simple:

  • In the input box in your Apple ID, select “Forgot password”;
Login form for Apple account
  • find “Reset password”;
  • a valid link to create a new word will be sent to the email linked to your profile. You need to check all your inbox and go to the address in the email from the company;
  • create a new combination. In order to confirm the action, it is necessary to write the digital pin of identification displayed on other gadgets from Apple. Once access is restored, you can disable the service.

Some specifics

It may happen that you have correctly disabled the option, but can not remember your answers to the control questions, the following instructions will help:

  • go to the restore page at;
  • type in your username – the name of your own ID;
  • click continue;
  • find the reset sub-item;
  • Two-factor authentication is activated in the account, so you can confirm the action with a pin in a new window. After that, you will be redirected to a page with other questions.

The same procedure must be in every Apple ID in any case, you can’t undo it. In the window, the system will allow the user to select three questions from a list. There are the usual topics, which can only be answered by the owner of the profile. The answer is written in a specialized field under the relevant question.

Be sure to watch for cases and keyboard layout – it’s easier to write in regular letters, without the use of numbers and special characters. You can disable the function by answering a couple of 3 such questions.

No access to the device from the trusted list

When there is no permission to use equipment that is on the trusted list, you should use the universal key. It must necessarily be written when the option we are talking about today is enabled. It can be found in the account menu. If you have not logged out, you can see the key in settings and security. If you have previously logged out of your account, the manufacturer’s support team can help you regain access to your profile. Send a message with a precise and detailed description of the problem here –

Notification did not come

Usually failures to receive the verification combination are the result of an operating system failure. If this happens to you, you can try resending the code or rebooting both devices. It may happen that a text message has arrived, but it doesn’t show up in the notification center. Look in your inbox, there should be the necessary combination. It should have apple corporation as the sender.

There is another great way to reset – deleting the emails from the manufacturer and texting again. In some cases, the error is caused by the fact that the memory, which has been allocated for storing letters of one recipient, has overflowed.

What can I do if the program does not have support for verification codes?

Not all software has a pre-installed ability to interact with special codes. It is configurable in your account. To do this, you have to get into your own profile through the browser and come up with your own password to log in to the various programs. Only you will know these pins, and you can take them for all the services that use the Apple ID:

  • cloud Icloud;
  • calendar;
  • notes and so on.

You follow these steps:

  • log in through your browser;
  • Go to “Security” and click “Change”;
  • In the new window you choose to create a password, select the application or several applications where the created pin will be used;
  • save the changes. After that, you will have to enter the invented password during authorization.

There was an error

You tried to activate two-factor authentication and you were notified that you would have to try it later. This means that you won’t be able to set up the feature anytime soon. This happens in two situations:

  • Your Apple ID password was recently changed;
  • When you add a new verification question.

You can’t immediately change your password and configure the verification, because such actions are judged by the Apple system as an attempt by intruders. In the notification with the setting error there is a date from which you can start creating a multi-level check. The letter will be sent to the email linked to the account.

How do I disable two-factor authentication in Apple ID? As you can see, it’s easy enough to do, you just need to follow the instructions. But before you do it, think carefully about whether you need to do it, because this way there is an additional guarantee of protection not only for your device, but also for your personal data. If you have any questions, ask them in the comments.
