How to password protect Word 2010 and other versions

How to password protect a Word document

Hello There are times when you need to hide the contents of an important file from prying eyes. Therefore, today I would like to discuss how to password protect a Word 2010 document and other versions of this text editor. Let’s look at a few encryption options and methods for unlocking content.

Locking methods.

Once you encrypt an item, you will need to enter a secret code that a limited number of people will know in order to open it. There is no other way to unlock it.

I highly recommend coming up with a complex password containing both regular and uppercase letters and numbers. You can use special online services that automatically generate a character set according to specified criteria (length, characters used, etc.).

Now let’s go straight to the instructions for the different versions of Word.

Word 2003

  • To put the encryption, you should go to the “Tools” section of the top menu and select “Options” from the list:

  • A new window will appear with many tabs. We are interested in “Security.” And at the very top will be the document encryption settings.
  • We will specify the combination of symbols to open the file:

  • To save the changes, don’t forget to click on “OK”. A small confirmation dialog will appear, where you will have to specify the password again:

That is all. You can close the file and try to open it again. You should see a window asking you to enter a code. The number of attempts to enter it is unlimited, so you don’t need to worry about random mistakes.

How to set a password on a Word 2007 file

In this version of the text editor from Microsoft, the interface is slightly different from the 2003 program. So the instructions will be a little different:

  • On the left there is a button with the Microsoft Office emblem, clicking on it brings up the application’s main menu. From the primary list, we choose “Prepare” and then select the “Encrypt” component. This is what it looks like in practice:

  • All that remains is to specify your code and click on “OK”.
Confirm Word password
  • A small confirmation dialog box will appear, where you will have to enter your encrypted set of letters and numbers one more time.

A few steps – and your document is secure!

Word 2010

I will not digress, but pass straight to the instructions:

  • There is a horizontal menu at the top with the “File” item. This is the one you should click on first.
  • Next, in the list, click on “Information”. You will see several sections on the right. At the top there will be an image of a lock with a key – select it.
  • A submenu will appear, with the element “Encrypt”.

  • It remains only to specify your combination of characters, click on “OK”.

  • A small confirmation dialog will appear, where you will have to enter the secret set of characters again.

Simple, don’t you agree!

How to remove the lock?

It makes sense that one day you would want to know how to remove the password from a Word document.

2003

  • First, open the file by entering your code to unlock it.
  • Go to the “Tools” menu – then “Options” – and at the very end the “Security” tab.
  • Now remove all characters (black dots) from the “Password for …” field and click on “OK”.
  • When closing the file, the program will ask you “Save changes or not? Be sure to confirm by clicking “Yes”.

2007

  • Open your file by entering the code to unlock it.
  • On the left there is a button with the Microsoft Office logo, clicking on it activates the main software menu. From the list select the item “Prepare”, and then – “Encrypt”.
  • Erase the code from the input field, click on “OK”.
  • When you close the program will ask you “Save changes or not? Be sure to confirm by clicking “Yes”.

2010

  • First, open the file by entering your code to unlock it.
  • In the horizontal menu, there is an item “File”. This is the one you should click first.
  • In the list, choose “Information”. A couple of sections will open on the right. At the top will be an image of a lock with a key (“Protect…”) – click on it.
  • A submenu will appear, and there will be an item “Password encrypt”.
  • Remove the previously set password, save all the changes you have made.

Now the Word file can be opened and viewed by anyone. I am sure this topic is easy to understand.

Regards, Victor!
