How to remove echo in Discord: why the interlocutor hears it and what to do, how to fix it

Just recently, during another roll, a new member joined our voice channel. There was nothing unusual about it until this user started talking. Instead of clear familiar speech an unpleasant and barely intelligible echo came out of the headphones, as if the player was talking from a big barrel. In fact, the problem was not in the environment, but in the settings of the computer. If this is familiar to you, we will tell you how to remove this annoying echo in Discord.

Possible causes of echo in Discord

In fact, echo is one of the most primitive sound effects when a sound wave bounces off the obstacles with a constant attenuation. Almost every program for working with sound can imitate this effect.

Below we have listed the main causes of cyclic echo:

  1. Poor microphone quality. The input device is unable to handle the resonance of sound waves on its own, and therefore people hear noises.
  2. Software sound distortion. One audio program specifically corrects normal input sound to distorted output sound. Viruses rarely make such intrigues, so the user is usually aware of such a program.
  3. A wire that is not all the way connected. In theory this may cause any kind of distortion. In practice, only the suppression of high frequencies was noticed.
  4. Scrambled speaker. If you set up a mode in which the user hears himself, and even through the speaker, this problem can not be avoided. Micro picks up his own voice signals and then repeats them afterwards. Some kind of endless loop (or recursion). By the way, if someone you’re talking to is also listening through the speaker and turns on the micro at the same time, it will lead to the same result. If you can hear yourself at your friend’s conference, then that’s the reason.
  5. Echoes in the room. Even if the sound is clear in the room, the microphone is more sensitive than the ears. For example, a headset pressed against a wall will pick up even wall vibrations.

The list is far from complete, but even those reasons that we have not listed are easily solved with the following methods. However, before you get started, check your computer’s hardware. To check the quality of the microphone and the connection method by software, alas, will not work. Therefore, we do not consider this step.

Ways to solve the problem

Let’s consider the most common ways to solve the echo problem on a Windows or Linux computer. All the instructions below do not require any special skills, and therefore they can be managed by a user with any degree of familiarity with the computer.

Through the application itself

Folk wisdom says “don’t reinvent the wheel a second time”. This phrase is especially true for our problem. The thing is that the developers originally thought of a feature to reduce echo, which is called “echo cancellation”. To run it, follow these instructions:

  • Open Discord. It is advisable to do this through the client you are installing, as there may be additional problems with accessing the input device through the browser.
  • Open the settings section. To do this, click on the gear icon at the bottom left of the window.

  • Go to the “Voice and video” section. To do this, locate it on the left side of the screen.
  • Scroll through the window until you find the “Voice Processing” subsection.
  • Set the switch next to “Echo Cancellation” to “On.”

Done. The settings will be saved automatically. By the way, there are quite a lot of voice settings there, do not hurry to leave this section. These settings are especially noticeable when the user plays with headphones.

PC microphone settings

If the problem cannot be solved locally in a single application, then you will have to tinker a bit with the settings of the operating system itself, in which the user works. As you know, today the lion’s share of the market is divided between Windows and Linux kernel operating systems. About each operating system separately.

Windows is known for having a nice interface, where everything is intuitive but nothing can be found at once. First, the user can check which applications are currently interacting with the microphone. To do this, open the tray (located on the right side of the taskbar) and find the bright blue microphone icon. When hovering over the microphone, all applications using the microphone will be displayed. The absence of the icon indicates that no program is listening to you yet.

So, with these “shenanigans” you can determine whether there is a program on your computer that distorts the sound. What to do in such a case? Find it in the Manager and close it, and then remove it from the autorun. If the problem is not in the program, it is recommended to enable automatic noise reduction through the settings. To do this, sequentially perform the following steps:

  • Find the speaker icon in the tray. Click on it with the mouse and select the “Sound settings” item.

  • Go to “All Audio Devices.
  • Locate the “Amplify Sound” switch. Move the switch to the “On” position.

Done. Of course, this feature (like many built-in utilities) works extremely crooked, but sometimes it helps. Also, the noise suppression setting opens automatically when the microphone is connected. This works on computers with an ASUS motherboard installed.

Many people think that Linux is purely a professional OS for geeks and IT professionals. In fact, there are many distributions, including some beginner-friendly images. For example, Ubuntu has a well-designed graphical interface and is therefore a good choice for new users. On the example of this OS we will describe how to fix the sound problem. Algorithm of actions:

  • Open the terminal. To do this, just press the key combination “Win” + “T”.

  • Enter the command “PULSE_PROP=”filter.want=echo-cancel discord””.

In this way, you will start an additional noise cancellation server, which is what helps to fix the problem. True, you will have to enter the command every time you start the system.

Third-party programs

If the above ways didn’t help you, you’ll still have to turn to third-party programs and services to turn off noise and echo. We suggest you stop your eyes at the program NoiseGator. To work with it, you need to do the following steps:

  • Download the program from the official website.
  • Run it. It may only appear in the tray.
  • Click on the tray icon and click “Show”.
  • In the window that appears, select your microphone from the “INPUT” drop-down menu. Under “OUTPUT” select the virtual cable.

Done. Now the quality of the recording will increase automatically.

How to deal with a problem on a mobile device

If your interlocutor complains about echoing while communicating through the phone, this is a problem that can easily be solved. To do this, you just need to go to the settings of Discord (opened through the three horizontal lines in the app) and go to the section “Voice and Video”.

There will also be an item “echo cancellation”. However, echo on phones is most often caused by the lack of headphones. The first thing you should do is to buy headphones.
