How to speed up the Internet on Android: ways and programs to increase the speed

Smartphone is a smart device, whose work is tied to the connection to the Internet. If the connection is characterized by low speed, the user will experience discomfort when interacting with the gadget, because in this case it is impossible to watch streaming videos, and pages in the browser open for several seconds. Today let’s find out how to speed up the Internet on your Android phone, as well as talk about the causes of slowdown and ways to check the current speed.

Why the Internet on your smartphone is slow

When talking about Internet speeds, it is important to distinguish between mobile network connections (3G and 4G) and Wi-Fi. These are two different technologies that are accessed by different companies. For example, your cellular provider (like Beeline) is responsible for the mobile connection, and your Internet service provider (like Rostelecom) is responsible for Wi-Fi. Therefore, the reasons for low speed will be different.

Below we will highlight the main factors affecting the slowdown, in brackets, if necessary, will be specified for what type of characteristic of this or that problem:

  • poor communication coverage (4G);
  • remoteness from the receiver, as well as the presence of a large number of obstacles between the smartphone and the router (Wi-Fi);
  • exhaustion of the traffic limit (4G);
  • speed limitations of the provider (Wi-Fi);
  • a large number of devices connected to one network;
  • Operation of several applications that actively consume traffic;
  • parallel downloading of files;
  • poor technical characteristics of the smartphone.

Identification of one of the highlighted factors allows to solve the problem in the shortest possible time. After all, the user understands that if the slowness of the Internet is due to the parallel downloading of files, you need to temporarily suspend it, and when the limit of the service provider is exhausted, you can respond by connecting an additional package of traffic.

Often, however, the slow speed is associated with a malfunction in the device or improperly set connection settings. These are much more complicated factors, which, however, can also be eliminated without much difficulty. Below we will consider all the ways to improve the connection, but first it is important to check the current Internet speed.

Checking the Internet Speed

Speed is a relative concept, which must be confirmed by numbers to identify the problem. Therefore, the first thing recommended is to test the connection speed:

  • Open your browser.
  • Go to speedtest.net.
  • Click on the “GO” button.
  • Wait until the end of the test and read the final report.

screenshot_3

As a side note. SpeedTest is not the only test that determines connection speed. There are other similar services that work through both the website and the mobile app.

Regardless of which test service you choose, the results of the scan will show your download and upload speeds, as well as your ping (signal transmission latency). You should transfer this information to the values declared by your provider (service provider). Remember that the speed may be limited in accordance with the selected tariff, as well as due to the exhaustion of traffic. Also, it is strongly affected by the quality of the equipment used.

Fixing the problem

Go to the solution to the problem only if the actual speeds differ from those offered by your provider or mobile network operator. Here are the main options for speeding up the Internet. It is not certain that each of them will help to increase the speed, but at the same time, you should not reject the suggested recommendations.

Removing applications that consume traffic

If you have excellent network coverage and a high data transfer rate, but your browser still has difficulty opening pages, you need to check which applications are consuming the most traffic. You can do this as follows:

  • Open your phone settings.
  • Go to “Connecting and sharing” and then “Data transfer” (the names of the menu items differ from model to model).
  • Study the information provided.

screenshot_5

Following three simple steps, you can find out which applications consume the most traffic. If necessary, the statistics can be sorted by day, week or month. If you find one or more programs in the list that consume an abnormal amount of traffic, you can increase the speed of the Internet by disabling their operation in the background, as well as by completely removing them:

  • Open your device settings.
  • Go to the “Applications” section.
  • Select the suspicious program.
  • Click on the “Uninstall” button to remove it completely.
  • Open the “Permissions” tab to prohibit the application to consume traffic in the background.

screenshot_6

Of course, this is not the only factor that affects the connection speed. So don’t worry if after uninstalling the program it turns out that the Internet is not much faster. Just follow a few more recommendations.

Cleaning the application cache

Also, the poor operation of the Internet on the phone can be associated with overflowing application cache. Therefore, the garbage should be cleaned:

  • Open your smartphone settings.
  • Go to the “Applications” section.
  • Select the program of interest.
  • Click the “Clear cache” button.

screenshot_7

Important. Do not confuse the “Clear cache” and “Clear data” options. The first one removes garbage, and the second one deletes all user information stored inside the application.

After performing the operation, it is advisable to restart the smartphone. Then you can reconnect to the Internet to test its speed in tests or real use.

Changing the network settings

This option to improve the Internet connection is suitable for those who use a connection over a mobile network. The fact is that there are several generations of network. 4G is considered relevant, but your phone can also work in slower 3G and 2G. Therefore, it is recommended to forcibly switch your phone to the fourth generation networks:

  • Open the settings.
  • Go to “SIM cards and mobile networks” and then to “Preferred network type”.
  • Select 4G.

screenshot_8

Note that older phones do not support 4G, and therefore can not work in the fourth generation networks because of technological peculiarities. Also, do not forget about the effect of the speed of the Internet on the autonomy. The higher it is, the faster your smartphone runs down.

Internet Speed Master (ROOT)

Internet Speed Master is a useful application that allows you to improve your internet signal. Internet Speed Master is available for free download through Google Play and performs its functions only if you have root rights. If not, you can get root access directly through the program:

  1. Launch the Internet Speed Master.
  2. Click on “Improve Internet Connection” if you already have root rights.
  3. Click on “Apply Patch” to speed up the Internet.

Important. Getting root rights entails a lot of problems. So, your phone will be removed from the warranty, and some functions of the device related to financial transactions will be limited.

After you finish using Internet Speed Master, don’t forget to reboot your device, otherwise the changes made by the program won’t take effect. Then you can see the speed increase on your own.

Internet Booster

Another good gas pedal that differs favorably from the Internet Speed Master in the absence of the need to get root rights. To increase speeds you will need:

  1. Run Internet Buster.
  2. Accept the user agreement.
  3. Press the red button in the center.

The program will optimize your network within seconds, and then you can see the speed increase yourself.

Internet Speed Meter Lite

This is a handy program, which, alas, will not help you to increase speed. But it can be a great tool to analyze your internet connection. So, by going to the Internet Speed Meter Lite options, you can activate the display of speed indicators. In the future it will help to understand what affects the speed of the connection, and why the Internet is so slow.

Surfing through Opera for Android

If your complaints are related to web surfing, that is, opening pages in the browser, then you will be helped by the program for enhancing the Internet Opera. This is an advanced web browser, in the settings of which there is a function to activate turbo mode. It compensates for low speeds by eliminating unnecessary interface elements. You just need to activate the traffic saving, and then work becomes much more comfortable.

Replacing the “Options” (ROOT) file

A more complicated method for those who are willing to spend free time to solve Internet problems. You can improve the quality of the connection in the following way:

  • Install the application ES Explorer, which will act as an alternative file manager.
  • Activate “Root Explorer” function in the settings of the program.
  • Go to /system/etc/ppp.
  • Open the properties of the “Options” file lying here.
  • Uncheck the “Write” checkbox.
  • Save the changes.

Then restart the device and check if the proposed manipulations will affect the connection speed. If everything remains the same – follow the final recommendation.

Editing the build.prop file

As a last resort we suggest editing the contents of the build.prop file. To do this you need to install Build Prop Editor application on the phone and assign the following value to the specified file:

net.tcp.buffersize.default=4096,87380,256660,4096, 16384,256960

net.tcp.buffersize.wifi=4096,87380,256960,4096,16384,256960

net.tcp.buffersize.umts=4096,87280,256960,4096,16384,256960

net.tcp.buffersize.gprs=4096,87380,256960,4096,16384,256960

net.tcp.buffersize.edge=4096,87380,256960,4096,16364,256960

net.rmnet0.dns1=8.8.8.8

net.rmnet0.dns2=8.8.4.4

net.dns1=8.8.8.8

net.dns2=8.8.4.4

Finally, save your changes and reboot your smartphone. After that, the connection quality should improve. But even if you are not satisfied with the speed even now, try to contact your service company to find out the real reason for the problem.
