Test realme 8 5G

We check the latest affordable smartphone from the stable of the increasingly popular realme brand – realme 8 5G model. What can we count on in a new 5G smartphone for not much money?

Realme is present on the Polish market since April last year, but the company really does not slow down. A month ago, realme 8 and realme 8 Pro models went on sale (test here), and in May debuted realme 8 5G, a phone fighting for the title of one of the cheapest 5G devices on the market. How did it perform in the tests?

Design and appearance

In a characteristic for realme yellow box we find the phone itself, a silicone case and a charger with a USB-C cable. A typical package. The phone itself looks good, not deviating from the standards of devices for about 1000 zł. The dimensions of realme 8 5G are 162.5 mm by 74.8 mm by 8.5 mm (so it is quite a slim device), and the weight is 185 g. The whole thing fits well in the hand.

On the left side there are buttons that change the volume level, and on the right – the fingerprint reader (it works properly) and also the on/off button. On the back there is placed a typical camera module with lenses. The casing of the phone is made of plastic that is pleasant to the touch. Apart from the headphone port, the phone has a tray for 2 nano-SIM cards and a microSD card, which is not such a common sight these days. The speaker doesn’t stand out for anything extraordinary. There is no lack of NFC. All in all, a good looking affordable smartphone.

Screen

In this model realme bet on an IPS LCD screen with a diagonal and 6.5 inches and a resolution of 2400 by 1080 pixels (405 PPI). The screen aspect ratio is 20:9, and the smartphone boasts a display with a refresh rate of 90 Hz and 180 Hz sampling. The top brightness is 600 nits. How can we evaluate the screen itself? It performs really well for this price segment. Colors, contrast (1500:1) and brightness level, even in sunlight, do not raise major objections. This is definitely one of the pluses of the described model.

Specifications and capabilities

Realme has bet on an 8-core MediaTek Dimensity 700 5G processor, which supports SA and NSA standards. During our tests we used 5G on the Plus network – the phone had no problems finding the next-generation network. The GPU in this model is Mali-G57. On the domestic market we can find versions of the phone with 4 GB RAM and 64 GB ROM (Plus network only version) and 6 GB RAM and 128 ROM. The third model, for the moment not available in Europe, has 8 GB RAM and 128 GB ROM – this is the version we received for testing.

Benchmark score:

Geekbench 5.0: pt. 571 Single-Core, 1774 Multi-Core

For comparison

Realme 7: Geekbench 5.0: pts. 516 Single-Core, 1639 Multi-Core.

Realme 7 5G: Geekbench 5.0 568 pts. Single-Core, 1779 pts Multi-Core.

Realme 6: Geekbench 540 pts. (Single-Core) and 1730 (Multi-Core),

Realme 8 Pro: Geekbench 5.0: 571 Single-Core, 1692 Multi-Core

Daily use of the phone did not cause any problems, everything worked flawlessly – from browsing the Internet, through applications, to less graphically advanced games.

The phone debuts with Android 11 and a new version of Realme UI overlay in version 2.0. The updated version of the overlay is still under development, but already at this stage you can see the emphasis on greater minimalism and the greatest possible possibility of changing the settings of some aspects (eg modification of the appearance of icons, their size and size of the application name). Already at this stage Realme UI 2.0 looks promising, but there is no question of revolution, only evolution.

Camera and picture quality

The realme 8 5G features a very standard camera, consisting of the tried-and-true 48MP Samsung S5KGM1ST (f/1.8, FOV: 80°) and 2-megapixel f/2.4 macro and black-and-white lenses. The phone uses a camera overlay by realme, with modes such as Portrait, Panorama and the quite correct Night Mode (Ultra Night). The main lens supports x10 digital zoom, in practice x2 zoom works fine, and zooms above x5 are pointless. Overall, this is a very typical lens for an inexpensive phone model.
